The Start of the Trout Season...

On a very cold and wet St Patrick's day morning Sam and I ventured down to the river Dodder for the start of the trout season. The weather was miserable at times with snow, rain and freezing temperatures but we fished on regardless. However the fishing wasn't much better than the weather but we figured that we would give it a few hours anyway. In the end we dropped a few fish between us before Sam managed to coax one to the net, a lovely brown trout of 1lb 8oz.

Rainbow Trout

On a cold bright morning with a light dusting of snow on the ground and temperatures below freezing Sam headed off to meet up with his friend Dave. He had been invited to try his hand at fishing for Rainbow Trout this weekend and would be targeting them on ultra light gear and lures, while Dave would be fishing the fly. Dave was the first of the mark with a good fish of about 2lb or so and a short while later Sam caught his first fish of the day on a small Rapala Countdown. Dave had a few more nice fish on the fly but Sam was struggling a little and trying different lures until he switched to a 3g Rapala Husky Jerk Glass Minnow and started catching a few fish. The best of which took off on a couple of run, stripping line off the reel and jumping clear of the water a couple of times, before a slipping into the net, a lovely trout of 47cm. The lads ended up with five fish a piece, all of which were returned. Not bad for a short session on a very cold morning.
