Return of the Mack... (Mackerel)

With the weather and coloured water putting paid to any plans of targeting the bass this weekend myself and Sam decided to take a spin out to the local harbour for a little lrf action. As we arrived and began setting up Sam remarked how it was surprising that the mackerel didn't seemed to come into this particular spot in any numbers considering that there is usually lots of fry and sand-eel about. Well no sooner had he said that than the water in front of us began to boil with mackerel chasing fry. Time for a little lrf mackerel action! We both rigged up with some vibe/blade lures and were quickly into a few fish. I was bringing in what I assumed was a mackerel when I realised that it was actually two mackerel on the one lure, great fun on the light gear. However they disappeared just as quickly as they arrived and all the bites and hits dried up. We persisted a little while longer with the vibe/blade lures and surprisingly we started getting small whiting on them. I didn't think that small whiting like that would actively chase a lure but there you go. Then as the light faded and the bites began to drop off we switched over to sp's, rigging up with both Ecogear Strawtails and Gulp Sandworms. The place must have been stuffed with small whiting and we were plagued by them for the rest of the night but also caught a couple of little gobies and a scorpion fish.
